| Description: | The overall goal of the WHCCS fellowship program is to train outstanding, evidence-informed public health leaders who will fulfill Northwestern mission and strategic plan. The purpose of this fellowship is to train eligible clinicians for a career in public health leadership though rigorous academic coursework, high quality original research, teaching, clinical practice and mentorship. Upon completion of the fellowship, fellows will be well situated to design, seek funding for, and implement new, public health oriented educational programs and represent Northwestern in public health initiatives at state and national levels.
Fellows are expected to seek and gain acceptance to a Masters degree program in public health at an accredited institution within 1 year of hiring and actively participate in public health leadership activities. Practical experience in knowledge transfer and public health will be gained through fulfilling key responsibilities in federally funded research education programs and assigned clinical research. Fellows are expected to seek grant funding from NIH and other agencies for fellowship activities within 1 year of hiring. Preference will be given to those individuals who have demonstrated excellence in leadership.

| Duties: | 1. Receives practical clinical and research experience through active participation on one or more clinical trials.
Participates in study steering committee meetings.
Works with experienced medical and chiropractic physicians to perform evidence-informed clinical assessment of potential research subjects. This includes physical examinations and patient histories according to standardized protocols and the best available evidence. Participates in weekly, multi-disciplinary case review meetings with other clinicians to discuss clinical findings and diagnoses
Performs public-health oriented qualitative interviews of study participants; participates in analyses of qualitative data
Participates in the publishing of original research in peer-reviewed, indexed, high impact scientific journals
2. Gains knowledge and experience through active participation in education and knowledge transfer activities including the following:
Receives training in teaching methods from University of Minnesota collaborators focused on dissemination of public health and research related information.
Designs, develops, implements and evaluates new public health-related, clinically oriented coursework for the chiropractic program as part of the NIH funded CAM Research Education Project. Includes participating on working groups, identifying learning objectives consistent with approved competencies, designing lesson plans and classroom activities, teaching classes, developing and participating in student evaluation and other teach related responsibilities as assigned.
Leads public-health related journal clubs for faculty and students.
Provides mentorship to NWHSU students desiring a career in public health.
Provides the necessary leadership to foster student and faculty participation in public health related initiatives on behalf of the University.
Submits and presents original work at the American Public Health Association annual conference and other public health venues.
Seeks participation in the leadership of the Chiropractic Section of the American Public Health Association.
Participates in the design of future public health and research focused education programs and assists with the preparation/submission of federal grant applications.
3. Participates in formal and informal coursework and mentorship activities related to grant seeking, public health, organizational leadership, and knowledge transfer
Enrolls and satisfactorily completes a Masters degree related to public health at an accredited university (part-time basis) maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Completes the CAM Research Education Research Scholars program at NWHSU.
Meets and provides weekly reports to assigned mentor regarding training activities; provides monthly progress reports to the Dean of Research.
Seeks NIH, HRSA and/or other funding support for public health training within 1 year of hiring.

| Qualifications: | Graduate of an accredited chiropractic institution; license to practice in Minnesota within 6 months of hiring.
Minimum of 1 year of demonstrated organizational leadership.
Acceptance to an MS or MPH degree focused on public health at an accredited institution within 1 year of hiring.
Excellent communication skills.
Ability to multi-task and perform at a high level of intensity for extended periods of time.
Identification and support of an experienced research mentor in public health at time of application.
